The University of Hong Kong–Shenzhen Hospital

Hospital Overview

2012
Public General Hospital
Grade III Class A
Shenzhen, Guangdong
The University of Hong Kong–Shenzhen Hospital was developed through cooperation between the Shenzhen municipal government and the University of Hong Kong. It is a large public Grade III-A general hospital with service processes shaped by its cross-border partnership. Alongside its general medical and surgical departments, it operates an International Medical Center designed for patients who need a dedicated international-care route. It was also among the earliest institutions involved in the Greater Bay Area’s Hong Kong and Macao medicine-and-device pilot. The University of Hong Kong–Shenzhen Hospital was established through a cooperation model between the Shenzhen government and the University of Hong Kong. Its clinical services combine a general public hospital with selected international medical programmes and a distinct approach to patient coordination. The International Medical Center is documented on the hospital’s own website, allowing overseas patients to find actual services and a public insurance-enquiry route. That transparency is a practical advantage when arranging appointments from outside China.

Clinical Strengths

General and multidisciplinary care

The hospital provides medical and surgical care, obstetrics and paediatrics, rehabilitation and diagnostic services within a coordinated clinical system. Patients with several conditions may be reviewed by different specialists, with the sequence of consultations guided by the main medical question rather than by the number of departments available.

Obstetrics, paediatrics, endoscopy and rehabilitation

The International Medical Center’s published service areas include obstetrics, paediatrics, endoscopy, rehabilitation and reproductive medicine. These are clinical services with their own assessments and follow-up requirements, not simply extensions of an executive health-check programme. Which department is appropriate depends on the patient’s condition.

Access to selected Hong Kong and Macao medicines and devices

As an early participant in the designated access programme, the hospital can use certain medicines or medical devices that have been approved through the relevant scheme for qualifying patients. Access remains subject to the clinical indication, approved products and required procedures. It does not mean that all medicines marketed in Hong Kong or Macao are generally available.

Clinical practice and treatment decisions

Hospital specialty services include internal medicine, surgery and focused programmes in oncology, orthopaedics, cardiovascular conditions and other areas described in its official departmental information. Patients may receive a physician assessment followed by investigation or referral to the appropriate subspecialty. An international centre does not mean that a clinical problem is automatically handled there: some patients will still require referral to specific departments or inpatient units. What matters is whether the hospital can assemble the right expertise and explain the proposed pathway.

Facilities & Technology

  • International Medical Center: International patient services support specialist bookings, with published guidance on insurance, endoscopy, maternity, rehabilitation and health management.
  • Bilingual and cross-border service support: For cross-border patients, the hospital publishes a bilingual hotline, English-language guidance and some bilingual test reports, alongside medical and insurance enquiry support.
  • Facilities in clinical use: The International Medical Center operates within the larger general hospital and lists outpatient, inpatient and related service options. This arrangement may reduce the practical difficulty of coordinating appointments and receiving complex care in a large hospital. Imaging, surgery, pathology and other technical facilities remain department-based; availability depends on the patient’s clinical indication and scheduling. For patients requiring a multidisciplinary opinion, the centre can serve as a contact point, but the final medical decision belongs to the treating team.

International Patient Services

This hospital provides one of the clearest official international insurance explanations in the list. Its English International Medical Center page includes insurance services and explains arrangements for direct billing with cooperating insurers, subject to actual policy approval and coverage. The centre also publishes a contact channel for overseas enquiries. Patients should verify their policy with the insurer before travel, ask whether a particular procedure requires prior authorisation and request an estimate of possible uncovered fees.

Patient-facing services and payment terms can change. Please confirm the receiving clinic, language arrangement and insurance pre-authorisation with the hospital and insurer before making travel or treatment commitments.

Featured Doctors

Prof. Wei Minxin

Cardiovascular and cardiac surgery

The hospital introduces Professor Wei among the senior experts leading its cardiovascular centre; clinical assignment and current availability require confirmation.

These are selected clinicians identified in public institutional profiles, not a live appointment or employment-status check. Their involvement in a particular case must be confirmed through the hospital.
