We Help You Access the Treatment You Need
CAR-T cell therapy is used to treat certain types of leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. China is also advancing clinical research into next-generation CAR-T therapies for solid tumors, exploring new treatment possibilities for eligible patients.
China continues to advance the development of innovative targeted medicines, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and bispecific antibodies. Selected therapies have received regulatory approval in China, expanding precision treatment options for patients with specific cancers.
Cancer immunotherapy, including PD-1/PD-L1 checkpoint inhibitors, is widely used in China. Domestically developed immunotherapy medicines offer additional treatment options and may provide cost advantages for certain patients.
Major medical centers in China offer minimally invasive interventional oncology procedures, including cryoablation, irreversible electroporation (NanoKnife), transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), and iodine-125 seed implantation, providing localized treatment options for eligible patients.
Specialized cancer centers in China offer proton and heavy-ion radiotherapy. These technologies enable more precise radiation dose delivery, potentially reducing radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissues when treating selected tumors.
Major hospitals in China utilize robotic-assisted surgery, image-guided radiotherapy, and other precision medical technologies, offering more refined and personalized surgical and radiation treatment options for patients with complex medical conditions.

Can foreigners receive medical treatment in China?
Yes. Foreign nationals can receive medical care at licensed public hospitals, international medical departments, private hospitals, and clinics in China.
Major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen have medical institutions that regularly serve international patients. Many leading public hospitals also operate dedicated International Medical Departments or international outpatient services.
Foreign patients may access services including general consultations, specialist care, diagnostic testing, surgery, inpatient treatment, rehabilitation, health checkups, and certain Traditional Chinese Medicine services.
For complex surgery, cancer treatment, or long-term medical care, it is advisable to submit your existing medical records, imaging, laboratory results, and treatment history before traveling. The hospital can then determine whether it is appropriate to accept the case and what arrangements may be required.
Why do some international patients choose to receive medical care in China?
International patients choose China for different reasons.
Major Chinese cities have large tertiary hospitals and specialized medical centers covering areas such as cardiovascular medicine, oncology, orthopedics, neurosurgery, reproductive medicine, ophthalmology, dentistry, rehabilitation, and integrated Chinese and Western medicine.
For certain treatments, the total cost may also be competitive compared with private healthcare in some countries. However, this varies significantly by hospital, physician, procedure, and clinical condition. It should therefore not be assumed that treatment in China is always less expensive.
Other patients come to China for a specialist consultation, a second medical opinion, access to a particular hospital or physician, or to combine conventional medicine with Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, or rehabilitation.
Cities such as Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen have also been expanding international patient services, including multilingual support, commercial insurance arrangements, patient coordination, and international medical programs.
What types of medical treatment can foreign patients seek in China?
Foreign patients can access a broad range of medical services in China, including:
- General and specialist consultations
- Second medical opinions and multidisciplinary consultations
- Cardiovascular care
- Cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment
- Orthopedics, sports medicine, and spine care
- Neurology and neurosurgery
- Gastroenterology
- Obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive medicine
- Ophthalmology and dentistry
- Health screening and chronic disease management
- Rehabilitation
- Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, and integrated care
Not every hospital provides the same specialties. For example, different international departments in Beijing and Shanghai focus on areas such as cardiovascular medicine, orthopedics, reproductive medicine, oral medicine, and other specialties.
For this reason, choosing the right specialty, hospital, and medical team is generally more useful than simply looking for the “best hospital.”
Should I choose a public hospital, an International Medical Department, or a private hospital?
Each option has different advantages.
Regular public hospital departments
These hospitals usually provide access to extensive specialist resources and a broad range of departments. Costs are generally more controlled, but the patient journey may be more complex and English-speaking support is not guaranteed.
International Medical Departments in public hospitals
These departments often combine the clinical resources of major public hospitals with more internationalized appointment, coordination, and language services. Fees are usually higher than ordinary public outpatient care.
Private hospitals and international clinics
These facilities may provide a more familiar international patient experience, including English-speaking staff, longer consultation times, private rooms, and established relationships with international insurers. Their fees can be considerably higher than ordinary public hospital services.
Shanghai’s official healthcare guidance similarly distinguishes between public hospitals, VIP/international departments, and private or foreign-funded medical facilities.
The appropriate choice depends on your condition, required specialty, language needs, insurance, budget, and expected treatment pathway.
What documents should foreign patients prepare for medical care in China?
For an ordinary hospital visit, your valid passport is generally the most important identification document. Shanghai’s official healthcare guide specifically lists passports for foreign-patient registration.
For planned cross-border medical treatment, it is advisable to prepare:
- Valid passport
- Valid visa, stay permit, or residence document where applicable
- Previous medical records and discharge summaries
- Laboratory and diagnostic reports
- Original CT, MRI, PET-CT, ultrasound, or other imaging files
- Pathology reports and, where required, pathology materials
- Current medication list and dosages
- Allergy information
- International insurance card or policy
- Insurance pre-authorization documents, if applicable
- Hospital appointment or pre-admission documentation
For complex cases, an organized English or Chinese medical summary can significantly improve communication with the receiving hospital.
Where a visa is being requested specifically for medical treatment, Chinese Visa Application Service Center guidance currently refers to documents such as a hospitalization or pre-admission certificate issued by the medical institution.
How much does healthcare cost in China?
There is no single nationwide price for medical treatment for international patients in China.
Costs depend on factors including:
hospital type, city, medical specialty, physician, diagnostic testing, treatment plan, medication, medical devices or consumables, length of hospitalization, room category, and whether international medical services are used.
Basic registration fees in ordinary public hospitals can be relatively low. Shanghai’s official guide, for example, lists ordinary outpatient registration fees at some public facilities in the range of only tens of RMB. However, this is the registration fee only, not the total cost of treatment.
International Medical Departments, VIP services, and private hospitals generally charge more.
For surgery, cancer treatment, inpatient care, or other high-cost treatment, patients should request a preliminary treatment plan and cost estimate in advance.
Any estimate should be understood as provisional. The final treatment plan and cost may change after an in-person consultation or additional diagnostic testing.
Can foreign patients use travel insurance or international health insurance in China?
Yes, but coverage depends entirely on the patient’s insurance policy and the hospital.
There are generally two arrangements.
Direct Billing
If the hospital has a direct-billing agreement with your insurer, eligible medical expenses may be settled directly between the hospital and insurance company. You may still need to pay deductibles, co-payments, or non-covered expenses.
Pay & Claim
If direct billing is unavailable, the patient normally pays the hospital first and later submits invoices, medical certificates, itemized bills, and other documents to the insurer for reimbursement.
Beijing’s official international healthcare guidance confirms that some medical institutions have direct-billing arrangements with commercial health insurers. Eligibility depends on the individual hospital and insurance plan.
Before treatment, confirm your geographic coverage, hospital network, pre-authorization requirements, outpatient and inpatient benefits, deductibles, exclusions for pre-existing conditions, and medical evacuation coverage.
Can I get a second medical opinion in China?
Yes. Patients with complex conditions can seek further evaluation from relevant specialists or multidisciplinary teams. Additional tests or review of existing imaging or pathology may be required before a definitive treatment recommendation is made.
Can foreign patients receive Traditional Chinese Medicine or acupuncture?
Yes. China has licensed Traditional Chinese Medicine hospitals as well as TCM departments within general hospitals. Patients should use appropriately licensed medical institutions.
Does AntuCare provide medical diagnosis instead of a hospital?
No.
AntuCare provides cross-border healthcare information, medical resource screening, hospital and physician matching, appointment coordination, medical document organization, translation, and patient journey support.
Medical diagnosis, treatment recommendations, prescriptions, surgical decisions, and other clinical decisions must be made by appropriately licensed medical institutions and healthcare professionals.
