Academic General Hospital
Grade III Class A

The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is one of southern China’s major academic general hospitals. Its Grade III-A clinical services sit alongside medical teaching and research, with specialties covering a wide range of medical and surgical conditions. The established Yuexiu campus and the international medical facilities developed at Nansha serve different patient needs. For someone with an uncertain diagnosis or a condition involving several organs, the value of a large general hospital lies in its ability to bring those different specialists into the same clinical discussion.
Founded in 1910, the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University operates major campuses including Yuexiu, Huangpu and Nansha. Its published introduction lists five national key disciplines and 34 national key clinical specialties. Patients with complex conditions can access medical, surgical, intensive-care, imaging and other diagnostic teams within one large academic institution, helping reduce repeated referrals between unrelated providers. Nansha was developed as an additional clinical and research campus, not as a separate hospital with an unrelated specialist system. The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University has three campuses, namely Yuexiu General Campus, Huangpu Campus (East Campus) and Nansha Campus.

Clinical Strengths

Complex diagnoses and multidisciplinary care

Patients sometimes arrive with a long series of investigations but no clear diagnosis, or with several illnesses that affect the available treatment options. The hospital can draw on physicians, surgeons, radiologists and pathologists to review these cases together. The purpose is not simply to order more tests. It is to clarify the diagnosis, decide which problem needs attention first and understand the risks of treatment.

Major surgery and transplant-related assessment

The hospital’s general surgery, digestive-disease and transplant-related specialties can assess patients considering major operations or other complicated treatment. In such cases, surgical options need to be weighed against imaging findings, organ function and the patient’s overall health. Organ transplantation is subject to strict legal and medical requirements, including formal assessment of eligibility and donor-related arrangements.

Follow-up after treatment and chronic illness

Patients treated overseas may seek a reassessment, a specialist opinion or follow-up care in China. Clinicians can review the original diagnosis, the treatment already received and the patient’s current condition before recommending next steps. Whether long-term care can be coordinated across countries depends on the clinical team and the arrangements available for that patient.

Clinical practice and treatment decisions

The Nansha campus identifies six priority clinical groups, including precision oncology, gastrointestinal disease, endocrine and cardiovascular conditions, reproductive medicine, reconstructive and burn surgery, and ear, nose and throat/ head-and-neck surgery. This provides a useful starting point for patients comparing campuses: a patient seeking advanced cancer assessment or digestive care may find a different service pathway from someone attending for a routine follow-up or an operation at the original Yuexiu site. Hospital-wide expertise should not be mistaken for an identical roster at every campus.

Facilities & Technology

  • Facilities for complex inpatient care: A broad range of specialist wards, operating theatres, diagnostic services and intensive-care support allows complicated cases to be investigated and treated within a coordinated hospital setting.
  • Nansha International Medical Center: The international medical center at the Nansha campus provides a dedicated route into the hospital’s clinical departments, including planned investigations, specialist consultations and treatment where the relevant service is available.
  • Facilities in clinical use: According to the Nansha campus introduction, its infrastructure includes operating theatres, intensive-care beds, an imaging centre, radiotherapy facilities, PET-CT, MRI, digital angiography and robotic surgical systems. These technologies perform different tasks: imaging helps define anatomy and disease extent, angiography guides selected vascular procedures, while surgical robots support particular operations. Their inclusion in a campus inventory does not establish that every technology is appropriate or immediately accessible for an individual case.

International Patient Services

The Nansha International Medical Center opened in 2023 and is described as a hospital-within-a-hospital, with its own outpatient area, inpatient beds, operating facilities and diagnostic services. The hospital reports a 33,000-square-metre centre with 150 planned beds and a commercial-insurance settlement platform. These details support a more specific account of international care than the label “VIP service” alone. Admission criteria, insurer authorisation and appointment arrangements still need checking for the individual patient.

Featured Doctors

Dr Hu Chunlin

International medical and acute-care consultation

Dr Hu is listed in the Nansha International Medical Center outpatient directory. The directory establishes a route to the centre but does not guarantee that a particular appointment remains available.

Dr Yuan Gang

International medical consultation

Dr Yuan also appears in the centre’s official doctor listing, providing another named point of reference for enquiries to the international clinical team.

These are selected clinicians identified in public institutional profiles, not a live appointment or employment-status check. Their involvement in a particular case must be confirmed through the hospital.
